On Nov 4, 2014, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the Committee on the Rights of the Child came together to issue a set of recommendations to clarify the legally binding obligations of the countries that have ratified the Committees’ respective conventions to eradicate harmful practices. The objective of these recommendations is to facilitate enforcement through improved access to education, empowerment of women, protection and support services for victims, and adoption of awareness-raising programmes that will change social attitudes and engage authorities and decision makers.
