As a result, the White Book on mental health in Italy has been published and an informative tour across the regions has been taken.
WHO has stated that Depression is the leading cause of disability on a global scale.
The progressing ageing of the population and a lifestyle the requires quick and frequent adaptations at the expense of stable physiological rhythms, have a significant impact on the issue.
Women are particularly at risk of depression, either directly and as caregivers. In most cases, Major depression appears in the 20-30ies and it reaches it’s peak in the 40ies, the most florid and productive period of women’s lives, therefore having a significant impact on the family, relational and professional areas.
It’s indeed mandatory to network and involve Institutions, in order to reduce the stigmatising stereotypes around Depression, as it takes such a toll on the quality and length of life of the patients and on our socio-economical resources.
On April the 10th 2019 Onda submitted a Manifesto and an Institutional Document at the Chamber of Deputies in Rome, with the aim of sensitising Institutions on taking concrete actions to support patients to overcome the shadow of Depression.
As a second step of this project, a White Book on mental health in Italy has been published in October in collaboration with the most experienced mental health clinicians in Italy.
This volume is an up-to-date state of the arts of the main psychiatric pathologies, with a specific focus on the available therapeutical strategies, either pharmacological and non pharmacological, and on the roles of caregivers and patients’ association in fighting the stigma.
The good results of these initiatives and the interest aroused by discussing this topic, lead us to continue our activity of sensitising Institutions to a more widespread regional level.
11 panel regional discussions will indeed take place in 2020. Starting from the Manifesto, the up-to-date state of the arts on Depression in Italy will be discussed and we will involve local institutional and healthcare key figures to promote concrete actions to facilitate access to assessments and appropriate treatments.
